Fort Flora was built on this site by civilians to protect approximately ten families during the War of 1812 and was named for landowner David Flora. Ten such forts were built circa 1811-1813 in the area that became Daviess County. The area was in Knox County, part of Indiana Territory from 1800 to 1816. Daviess County was carved out of Knox County in 1817, following Indiana's statehood in 1816.
