Snake Row included many different kinds of saloons, and Nick Lentz's establishment offered medicinal baths. On August 15, 1873, Ben Thompson confronted fellow gambler John Sterling in Lentz's saloon over the winnings of a game of Monte held earlier that day at Gambler's Roost. Sterling slapped Thompson, and Ellsworth lawman "Happy Jack" Morco drew a gun on Thompson. Thompson told Morco not to interfere and demanded that he "take the drunken man away!" Morco and Sterling then went out into the street and walked west toward Jake New's Saloon. Thompson later returned to Brennan's Saloon, where more trouble soon erupted.
