Ile Aux Galets Light, long known as Skillagalee Island Light, stands on a small island in northeastern Lake Michigan as part of a chain of lights warning ships away from the dangerous reefs and shoals near Waugoshance Point. Repeated wrecks, especially the destruction of the sidewheeler A.D. Patchin in 1850, spurred construction of a lighthouse in 1851, followed by replacements in 1868 and 1888. The present tower, fitted with an advanced Fresnel lens and later automated in 1969, reflects the demanding work of generations of keepers. Isolated, difficult to reach, and historically significant, it remains an important navigational landmark.
