The Glikbarg Building was built in 1907 after the April 18, 1906 earthquake destroyed much of downtown Salinas, providing a new home for the Salinas City Bank after the disaster. It was designed by William Henry Weeks and commissioned by the bank’s founder, J.H. McDougall. The bank’s original vault, dating to its 1873 founding, survived the quake and was moved about 20 feet to the new site, where the highly detailed building rose around it. At the time of this dedication, the building housed Dubbers Restaurant and Bar, named for former owner Harold “Dubber” Saunders, a naval aviator during World War II.
