Barnard Elliott Bee was born in Charleston, S.C., in 1824 and graduated from West Point in 1845. In 1861 he became a Brigadier General in the C.S.A. and commanded the 3rd Brigade of the Army of the Shenandoah. At Manassas, Va., on July 21, 1861, he gave Gen. T.J. Jackson the name "Stonewall." Mortally wounded there, he died on July 22, 1861, and was buried in his family plot in St. Paul's churchyard.
