Weippe Prairie has long been a traditional gathering place for the Nez Perce, where camas bulbs are harvested and baked each year, and in spring the blue flowers of the camas lily grow so thick that the prairie looks like a lake from a distance. In 1805, Lewis and Clark made their first contact with the Nez Perce at this site and ate fresh baked camas roots and dried salmon there.
