The Beauchamp-Newman House in Elizabeth, West Virginia, is the town’s oldest brick building and one of its earliest surviving structures. Built in the 1830s, about 1835 to 1840, by Alfred Beauchamp, grandson of the community’s first settler, it is a two-story brick home with hipped and gable roofs. Local tradition holds that its bricks were made from clay on Beauchamp’s land, probably by enslaved laborers, tying the house to the land and labor systems of its era. It also served as an early civic space when Wirt County’s first court meeting was held there on May 23, 1848.
