Built in 1893 by William Vogt, the Vogt Store building was one of Columbia's first department stores, offering goods ranging from a needle to a threshing machine. It included a grocery, meat market, dry goods, hardware, and farm implement store. The building had Columbia's first elevator, used to move supplies from the third-floor warehouse to the first-floor sales floor. Joe Rauch's Bank Exchange Saloon was also located in the building, and the second floor provided living space for family members. The building has been completely restored, with a modern elevator and offices added on the second and third floors.
