In 1835, settlers in the Mexican state of Tejas were on the brink of war. The military commander at San Antonio asked for the return of a bronze cannon, but the town refused, and soldiers were sent to take it back. On the morning of October 2nd, Texian volunteers and Mexican dragoons fought three minor skirmishes. The dragoons retreated, and the Texas Revolution was underway. During the "Come and Take It" skirmishes, the Texians fired both the bronze Gonzales cannon and a smaller iron cannon. The Gonzales cannon was taken to San Antonio. The smaller iron cannon was buried near Gonzales, later recovered, and is on display at the Gonzales Memorial Museum.
