The opening shots of the Texas Revolution have remained important to Texans and to Gonzales County. In 1903, a monument was erected near the site of the actual first shot, and it still stands just down the side road. In 1935, the State of Texas commissioned the large monument at this site, and it was completed in 1936, the year Texas celebrated its centennial. There is also an annual celebration of the Revolution and those fateful shots. A historic postcard shows the 1903 monument, the "Minuteman of Gonzales" monument in the city of Gonzales, and a drawing of the Gonzales cannon, drawing a direct comparison between the Texas Revolution and the American Revolution.
