Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge on Delaware Bay in eastern Delaware was established on March 16, 1937, as a sanctuary for migratory and wintering waterfowl along the Atlantic Flyway. Its extensive tidal salt marshes, freshwater impoundments, moist-soil areas, and upland crops support nearly 350 bird species as well as many other animals, making birdlife its central importance. The area also preserves a long human history, from Native American and Dutch names to a 1679 land sale, later farming and resort uses, and changes caused by an 1878 storm. Civilian Conservation Corps crews shaped much of the refuge’s infrastructure after 1938, and the Allee House remains a notable historic feature.
