Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Rockford, Illinois, occupies 155 acres on South Main Street and grew from Rockford Nursery, founded in 1910 by landscape architect William Lincoln Taylor, whose trees still define the grounds. After the Klehm family bought the nursery in 1968, they maintained it and donated it in 1985 to the Winnebago County Forest Preserve District for use as an arboretum. Expanded in the early 1990s into a broader public garden, it preserves a 12-acre pre-settlement bur oak grove with trees more than 300 years old, along with major conifer, European, East Asian, and North American plant collections and a range of themed garden areas.
