Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, Illinois, is a 12-acre cultural landscape established in 1978 on the site of John R. Anderson’s home and developed with landscape architect Hoichi Kurisu. Designed in the style of a 13th-century pond-strolling garden, it features winding paths, water, rock formations, and traditional Japanese buildings by Masahiro Hamada, while the Garden of Reflection adds a contemporary Japanese-inspired setting with sculptures by Carl Milles. Created to encourage cultural exchange as well as horticulture, it has hosted educational programs and public events, earned recognition from the Japanese government, and became a nonprofit public garden in 1998.
