Daniel H. Hastings, governor of Pennsylvania from 1895 to 1899, was born in 1849 on a farm 4.5 miles southeast of here. During his term, the State Department of Agriculture was created and the present State Capitol was planned. He lived most of his life in Bellefonte and died there in 1903.
