Built in 1924 in the small southeastern Oregon community of Frenchglen, this historic hotel became an important landmark near Steens Mountain and a gateway for travelers headed to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Early guests included people connected to Peter French’s P Ranch, and the building also housed teachers from the local school. Restored and enlarged in 1937 and 1938 by the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife with Civilian Conservation Corps labor, it survived as federal projects reshaped rural western facilities. Oregon Parks and Recreation acquired the property in 1973, and it entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 while continuing to serve visitors today.
