Alvord Hot Springs
Nature
Alvord Hot Springs is a geothermal spring in southeastern Oregon on the western edge of the Alvord Desert, where Steens Mountain rises sharply above the desert basin. The spring emerges at about 174 °F and is cooled through a pipe system before filling soaking pools at roughly 105 °F. Its mildly sulfurous water is a sodium-bicarbonate-chloride spring with significant sulfate, typical of the Alvord Basin. Two small man-made concrete pools serve visitors, with both open-air and covered bathing areas. Though located on private property, the springs were long free to the public until 2013, when Alvord Ranch added a caretaker and new facilities and ended free access.
