Originally known as Ten-Mile Ranch, this area served as a stagecoach stop on the Cheyenne to Deadwood trail in the 1870s. Its name changed to Englewood in 1891 when the railroad came through, in part because telegraphers found the shorter name easier to tap out. The community flourished until the 1940s, with the amenities of a railyard and modern community, and became the convergence point for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincey, Black Hills and Fort Pierre, and the Spearfish line. The foundation of the Englewood Depot is still visible.
