Terry Peak, a mountain near Lead in the Black Hills of western South Dakota, rises 7,064 feet above sea level as the most prominent peak in the Northern Black Hills and the sixth-highest summit in the range. Named for explorer Alfred Howe Terry, it developed into a ski destination beginning in 1936 with a rope tow installed by the Bald Mountain Ski Club. A chairlift added in 1952 and operating by 1954 marked its growth beyond a local hill. Expanded over time, the ski area now features numerous runs and lifts, hosted the NCAA Skiing Championships in 1971, and also serves regional communications with radio transmitter towers on its summit.
