F. Julius Fohs was born in N.Y. and moved to Marion, Ky., in 1890. He graduated from Marion High School, managed a fluorspar mining operation from 1900 to 1904, and served as assistant state geologist for Ky. from 1905 to 1912. In 1957, he received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Israel Institute of Technology for his assistance in the development of mineral resources. In 1926, Julius Fohs had Fohs Hall built and gave it to the people of Marion on the lot where the Fohs family had lived. In 1981, Fohs Hall, Inc., was formed for the hall's perpetual preservation and for its use by the citizens of Marion and Crittenden Co. as a community center and civic auditorium, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
