Organized in 1807 as the Gasper Society of United Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, this Shaker colony began a building program and established trade in textiles, seeds, mill products, and purebred cattle. Its peak membership was 350 and its acreage was 6,000. Its most prosperous period was 1840-60. It was the last western colony to disband, in 1922. In 1972, a museum moved here with handicrafts and furniture of the Shakers.
