Two points of the trench from the original fort remain visible. Confederate troops camped here from June to October 1861 after the Battle of Vienna. Union soldiers are thought to have built the fort during their occupation of the hill between 1863 and 1865. The Star Fort stands on a high hill overlooking the WO&D Railroad and Lawyers Road.
