Long Beach Island is a narrow barrier island off New Jersey, separated from the mainland by only 1 to 2 miles but connected by a single causeway, giving it a distinct identity. Home to about 10,000 year-round residents and around 100,000 in summer, it shifts from quieter, low-density communities in the north to denser, more commercial towns in the south. Used first by the Lenape for seasonal fishing and clamming, it was continuously settled from the 1690s. Shipping, whaling, lifesaving, tourism, and repeated storm damage have shaped its history, and today erosion, dune building, flooding, and sea-level rise are central challenges.
