Newfield Bridge
Science & Tech
Newfield Bridge in Newfield, New York, is a wooden covered bridge spanning the west branch of Cayuga Inlet and one of only 29 covered bridges remaining in the state. Once a common feature of rural roads, this bridge type has become rare, and Newfield Bridge stands out as the oldest covered bridge in New York still carrying motor vehicle traffic. That continuing practical use gives it unusual importance among preserved covered bridges, many of which survive only as landmarks or pedestrian crossings. Its historic significance was recognized by its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and it still serves both transportation and preservation.
