Lee County, Virginia, covers 446 square miles. It was formed in 1782 from Russell and named for Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee, a Revolutionary soldier and governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794. Daniel Boone’s son was killed by Indians in this county. Tennessee was first permanently settled in 1769 and was long part of North Carolina. In 1785, settlers formed the State of Franklin, which Congress did not recognize. Tennessee was admitted to the Union as the sixteenth state in 1796.
