Music has long been the backbone of Jefferson Street, which during the 1940's, 50's and 60's became a thriving mecca for the R&B scene. Speakeasies, grand nightclubs, supper clubs, and dancehall stood alongside elegant cafes, ice cream parlors, and the Ritz Theater. Nightlife landmarks including Good Jelly's Club, Club Del Morocco, Club Revillot, New Era, and Club Baron hosted Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Little Richard, Etta James, and notable local musicians. The music and culture of the historic Jefferson Street thoroughfare continue today through live music venues and an annual jazz and blues festival.
