Established near downtown Nashville as the home of local teams, Athletic Park was given the name Sulphur Dell by sports writer Grantland Rice in 1908. The ballpark became an important landmark to baseball fans across Middle Tennessee. It was the home of the Nashville Elite Giants, an independent African American team that later joined the Southern Negro League in 1932. The Nashville Vols played the final game there on September 7, 1963, and the stadium was torn down in 1969.
