Negro Hill is a mountain in New York's Catskill Mountains, northeast of Roxbury in Delaware County, near Roundtop, Clay Hill, and Ferris Hill. Its significance lies less in its topography than in its name, which reflects a broader and often troubling American pattern in place-naming. Originally called Nigger Hill, it was renamed Negro Hill in 1963, part of a wider change made at many similarly named places across the United States. Such names were often given by white Americans to locations associated with enslaved people, formerly enslaved people, or free African American communities who had lived there.
