Mayo
History
Boheh Stone in County Mayo is a natural quartz-flecked outcrop and one of Ireland’s finest Neolithic rock-art sites. Thought to have been carved as early as 3800 BC, it preserves around 250 petroglyphs, including cup-and-ring marks and keyhole motifs, among the oldest surviving evidence of human activity in the area. Later absorbed into Christian tradition as St. Patrick’s Chair, it became a waypoint on Tóchar Phádraig, linking it to Croagh Patrick’s sacred landscape. The site is also known for the twice-yearly “rolling sun” alignment with Croagh Patrick and for continuing discoveries and interpretations connecting its carvings to prehistoric sky-watching.
