Northerner was an 81-foot, two-masted schooner built in 1850 at Clayton, New York, and later used in the Lake Michigan lumber trade after earlier service on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Rebuilt after storm damage in 1859 and sold to new owners in Chicago and Wisconsin during the 1860s, she was carrying timber when hull damage at Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, led to temporary repairs at Port Washington in November 1868. Taken under tow toward Milwaukee, she capsized and sank, though her crew survived. Resting in deep water off Wisconsin, the fairly intact wreck preserves a mid-19th-century Great Lakes schooner tied to the region’s timber trade.
