The Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest, California, is devoted to the natural and cultural history of the northern Mojave Desert. Founded in 1962 and named for Maturango Peak in the Argus Range, it is closely associated with the Coso Rock Art District at the China Lake Naval Weapons Station, where it long organized guided petroglyph tours. Its exhibits explore the desert environment and the people who have lived there through displays of animals, plants, rocks, minerals, Native American artifacts, and contemporary arts and crafts. It also curates local collections, preserves historic documents, and serves as a federal-standard archeological repository for the Upper Mojave Desert region.
