Grand Mere State Park in southwestern Michigan near Stevensville combines recreation with a protected natural landscape shaped by dunes and ancient inland lakes just east of Lake Michigan. Covering about 1,100 mostly wooded acres, it includes three geologically ancient lakes left as glaciers retreated after the last ice age; two others once present have disappeared through aquatic succession, and the remaining lakes continue to change. Dunes along the lakeshore create a cooler microenvironment that supports uncommon, rare, threatened, and endangered plants in southern Michigan. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968, the park also offers sandy beach access, swimming, hiking, picnicking, boating, and cross-country skiing.
