On this site, a log cabin with a stone foundation was built for St. Philippine Duchesne and two other nuns. The work was done by the Pottawatomie Indians under the direction of black master carpenter Edmund, who had accompanied the nuns to Kansas from St. Charles, Mo. The cabin was 19' x 19' and was used as a schoolroom for Indian girls, while the loft served as a sleeping area for the nuns.
