In 1865, Peter Ludvigson, the first Walker War casualty, was killed by Indians three miles south of Sterling. In 1872, Wm. D. Funk and Daniel B. Funk settled on Six-Mile Creek and dug irrigation ditches for farming, and other families came later. A Manti branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized in 1874 with Wm. B. Petty as president. Dixon and Bunts operated the first store, Samuel T. Kenner, M.D. was the first school teacher, and Jane Snow, Catherine Edwards, and Fanny Kenner were midwives.
