The Green Hotel was built in 1913 by the Kern County Land Company to accommodate prospective land buyers for the settlement of Shafter. It was listed in the 1989 National Register of Historic Places and was restored in 1989 by the Green Hotel Restoration Committee with support from California Office of Historic Preservation grants.
