Regional Parks Botanic Garden, a 10-acre public garden in Tilden Regional Park in the Berkeley Hills east of Berkeley, California, was founded on January 1, 1940, as a focused survey of California native plants. Rather than functioning as a simple ornamental garden, it is organized to reflect the state’s varied natural environments and showcases the breadth of its flora. Its collections include nearly all of California’s conifers and oaks, strong holdings of Ceanothus and manzanitas, expanding groups of native bunchgrasses and aquatic plants, and about 300 rare and endangered vascular taxa. It serves both as an introduction to California plant diversity and as a refuge for uncommon species.
