The Petaluma Wildlife & Natural Science Museum, on the Petaluma High School campus in California, is a student-run museum that pairs a natural science collection with hands-on education focused on environmental learning, conservation, and habitat preservation. Originating as Ron Head’s classroom, it expanded dramatically after Hugh Codding donated the Codding Museum inventory in 1989, leading to the conversion of the school’s old bus garage into a 9,000-square-foot museum. Students study wildlife management and museum maintenance, care for live animals and preserved specimens, and serve as docents. Despite a 2010 leadership controversy, the museum continues tours, public openings, and summer camps as a student training ground and community resource.
