Archibald Gardner, born at Kilsythe, Scotland on Sept. 2, 1814, and died in Salt Lake City, Ut. on Feb. 8, 1902, was a pioneer of 1847 remembered as noble, generous, kind, and true to all. A mill builder devoted throughout his life to helping people, he arrived in Afton in October 1889 and by December was producing flour and lumber badly needed by the early settlers. His water-powered mills at the mouth of Swift Creek Canyon, together with his foresight, helped save the settlers from starvation the following winter. Beyond his work in Star Valley, he was known as the pioneer builder of the West, having built over 35 mills, many canals, and bridges, while faithfully serving his family, church, community, and country his entire life.
