The 37th parallel set the southern boundary of Colorado and Kansas, New Mexico's eastern boundary followed the 103rd meridian, Texas entered the Union with 36° 30' as its northern boundary, and the Cherokee Outlet ended at the 100th meridian, leaving a strip of land 34 miles wide and 167 miles long without any government or jurisdiction. Congress called this area the Public Land Strip, but it became known as No Man's Land and was home to outlaws, cowboys, and settlers, with Beaver City as its largest town. By the Organic Act of 1890, Congress attached this unclaimed land to the newly organized Oklahoma Territory with Beaver City as the county seat. It remained so until Oklahoma entered the Union on Sat. Nov. 16, 1907, after which three counties were formed from the Panhandle: Beaver, Texas, and Cimarron.
