The Chase and Mulholland Store and the Morning Star Mine Office stood on these foundations in Rush. George Chase, the company's first manager, built the store as a commissary, and C. A. Mulholland managed it. Purchases made there by company miners were deducted from their paychecks, and the convenience of that credit left some miners beholden to the company. Chase worked in the company office, where company meetings, payroll preparations, ore assays, and the weighing of ore wagons were conducted. With 83 men on the payroll in 1915, the mine office was essential to keeping the company afloat. For a long time it was the only store in Rush, and Mr. Mulholland's was the first general store, with a side room for dry goods and another part as a grocery store.
