USS Recruit is a landlocked U.S. Navy training ship built in 1949 at the former Naval Training Center in Point Loma, where recruits learned shipboard routines in a realistic setting before going to sea. Constructed on land as a two-thirds-scale replica of a destroyer escort, it included deck and bridge equipment, classrooms, nearby barracks, and other training facilities. Nicknamed USS Neversail because it had no engine or screw, it trained more than 50,000 recruits a year for decades. Decommissioned in 1967, rebuilt and recommissioned in 1982, and used until 1997, it later gained historic recognition and opened to the public in 2023 as a rare surviving Navy landship.
