Kingsley Plantation on Fort George Island preserves part of a larger estate within the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and reflects a much longer human history that includes Timucua occupation and the Spanish mission of San Juan del Puerto. Established as a plantation under British rule in 1765, it is best known for the period when Zephaniah Kingsley owned and lived there. Its plantation house is regarded as Florida’s oldest surviving plantation house, and the remains of 25 slave cabins form a rare intact group. The site also illuminates African cultural continuities and the contradictions of slavery, race, and family in Spanish and early American Florida.
