History
1
The slave quarters were a place where enslaved people found identity and strength through family, faith, and shared experiences. Many American traditions grew from their daily activities and beliefs, including practices centered on cooking, singing, dancing, worshiping, and healing. Although daily work was individually focused, life in the quarters revolved around family and community. Former slaves recalled gathering after the evening meal around a cabin to sing and moan songs seasoned with African melody, then dancing to an old fiddle, and slipping away on Sunday evenings into the woods and swamps to sing, pray freely, and pray for freedom.
