In World War II, the U.S. Navy submarine force suffered heavy losses despite its success. A total of 374 officers and 3,131 men were lost aboard 52 U.S. submarines still on patrol. Fleet Admiral C.W. Nimitz said the submarines held the lines against the enemy while fleets replaced losses and repaired wounds, and Vice Admiral C.A. Lockwood Jr. said they went down fighting and that the brothers who survived them took a grim toll on the enemy to avenge their deaths. Among the boats listed is USS Tang (SS 306), lost on October 25, 1944, with Lieutenant Frank H. Springer, executive officer, and the officers and crew named here; there were eight survivors, including the commanding officer.
