The Hallocks used the word "pightle," locally pronounced PIE-kel, for the grassy yard in front of the barn through which their driveway looped. The word is archaic, brought from East Anglia by the area's 17th century Puritan settlers, and originally described a small meadow or enclosure, though it is not found in modern dictionaries.
