In 1755, Benjamin Franklin, Deputy Postmaster General for North America, set out from near this point in his specially equipped carriage to place 30 stone mile markers along the King's Highway, now Route 25, from Suffolk Court House, now Riverhead, to Oysterponds, now Orient. The trip formed part of his effort to make the postal system more efficient for its customers and more profitable for himself.
