Frelinghuysen Arboretum is a 127-acre botanical garden in Morris Township, New Jersey, built around the Frelinghuysen family’s Colonial Revival mansion and formal gardens. Originally Whippany Farm, the estate of George Griswold Frelinghuysen and Sara Ballantine, it gained its notable rose garden in 1920. Their daughter, Matilda Frelinghuysen, began planning in 1964 to transform the property into an arboretum, and it was formally dedicated in 1971. Today its themed plant collections feature ornamental grasses, shrubs, perennials, shade trees, and fall foliage, alongside trails, a Braille Nature Trail, children’s garden programs, outdoor concerts on the Great Lawn, and a connection to Patriots’ Path.
