People of African origin and heritage served Florida’s military needs for more than four hundred years, and men and women of African origin were an important and essential part of Florida’s military history under Spanish, British, American, and even Confederate military forces. Their service was a long, unusual, and important part of the state’s military heritage, and their contribution merits proper and appropriate recognition.
