Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest in Clermont, Kentucky, was created by Isaac Wolfe Bernheim after he bought land in 1928 that had been heavily damaged by iron-ore mining and established the forest in 1929 as a gift in trust for the people of Kentucky. Designed beginning in 1931 by the Frederick Law Olmsted firm and opened to the public in 1950, it grew into the state’s official arboretum, designated in 1994. The property includes a vast preserve, a 600-acre arboretum with more than 1,900 labeled plant species and cultivars, extensive trails, research and education programs, and a continuing commitment to restoration, free public access, and environmental stewardship.
