Hocking Hills State Park in southeastern Ohio is one of the state’s best-known hiking destinations, with more than 25 miles of trails linking sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, deep gorges, and caves across six main areas. Its landscape was formed over hundreds of millions of years by ancient seas, erosion, and later glacial change that reshaped regional rivers. The area long sheltered human activity, from Adena culture inhabitants to Delaware, Wyandot, and Shawnee communities, and Old Man’s Cave is traditionally associated with trader Richard Rowe. Ohio began acquiring and restoring land here in the early twentieth century, and Civilian Conservation Corps crews built much of the park’s early infrastructure, helping establish a major tourism center.
