Cedar Falls is the most abundant waterfall in the park by sheer amount of water, where Queer Creek cascades down a rock face in a tremendous display of water’s power. Early settlers in the area gave the falls their unusual name after mistaking the stately eastern hemlock trees growing there for cedar trees, although no cedar trees stand near the waterfall itself. Even the earliest settlers maintained a well-kept picnic area for visitors, and in the early 1800s a gristmill was built at the top of the falls to harness the water’s power as it flowed over the cliff face.
